Long and Short, Defined

Going long profits if the price rises; going short profits if the price falls, achieved on a futures contract without ever borrowing or holding the underlying asset the way a spot short-sale would require.

Opening Either Side on Binance

Select Buy/Long or Sell/Short on the futures order form for Binance Futures, choose your leverage and margin mode, and confirm size before submitting.

Holding a Long and a Short at Once

one-way mode by default, with hedge mode available as an opt-in setting for holding a long and a short on the same pair at once on Binance. One-way mode nets any long and short on the same contract into a single position; hedge mode, where offered, keeps them as two separate positions with their own margin and PnL.

Funding Rewards or Costs Depending on Direction

funding settles every 8 hours (00:00, 08:00, 16:00 UTC) on most USDT-M perpetuals, with the live rate shown on the contract page before it settles A positive rate generally means longs pay shorts; a negative rate flips that — check the live sign before assuming which side is paying.

The Direction-Specific Mistake on Binance

A first-time futures user opening a leveraged position on a volatile altcoin perpetual instead of starting on BTC or ETH where the book is deepest.

  • Confirm long vs short before submitting, not after
  • Check the position mode if you intend to hold both sides
  • Check the funding sign before holding through a settlement
