Bybit Funding Rate: What It Is and Who Actually Pays It
The funding rate on Bybit is not a fee you pay to the exchange — it's a payment between long and short traders, and the settlement mechanics here are worth knowing before you hold through one.

Perpetual futures never expire, so exchanges use a periodic funding payment between long and short holders to keep the contract price anchored near the underlying spot price, rather than letting it drift indefinitely.
Funding Mechanics on Bybit
funding settles every 8 hours on most perpetuals, visible live on the contract page before it applies.

Positive vs Negative Funding
A positive rate typically means longs pay shorts, which usually happens when the market leans bullish and the contract trades above spot. A negative rate flips that. Check the live number before holding a position through a settlement time.
Funding Is Not a Trading Fee
Funding is paid between traders, not to Bybit itself, and only applies if you're holding an open position at the settlement moment — closing before settlement avoids that particular payment, though it doesn't avoid the trading fee on the fills themselves.
Why This Matters More on Bybit for Certain Trades
Skipping Demo Trading entirely and opening a leveraged live position on day one.
- Check the live funding rate before holding through settlement
- Remember funding is separate from the maker/taker trading fee
- A funding-rate arbitrage strategy is a real thing, but it has its own separate risks
What Makes Bybit Different Here
Bybit's bigger differentiator is a derivatives-first product with Demo Trading and Copy Trading sitting right next to manual spot and futures — worth keeping in mind for anything beyond the basics covered above.
Layer that on top of isolated and cross margin, plus portfolio margin for eligible UTA accounts that nets risk across positions, and the risk picture on Bybit looks different from a generic checklist.
a built-in calculator for liquidation price, required margin, and PnL on the futures trading screen, but none of it replaces reading the live contract terms before you size a trade.
- Watch for: skipping Demo Trading entirely and opening a leveraged live position on day one
- Also watch for: copying a leaderboard trader's leverage setting without checking their maximum drawdown first
- Run your numbers through a fee calculator before assuming the headline rate applies to your trade
