MACD line is typically 12 EMA minus 26 EMA of price.
Signal line is 9 EMA of the MACD line. Histogram is MACD minus signal.
- MACD line — raw momentum spread
- Signal line — smoothed trigger
- Histogram — distance between the two — momentum acceleration
- Default 12,26,9 — start here before customizing
Bullish and Bearish Crosses
Bullish cross — MACD line crosses above signal line.
Bearish cross — MACD line crosses below signal line.
- Cross below zero — stronger bear context
- Cross above zero — stronger bull context
- Late cross after big move — poor R:R
- Market order on cross bar — taker fee — consider limit
Zero-Line Bias
MACD above zero means 12 EMA above 26 EMA — bullish momentum bias.
Below zero — bearish momentum bias.
- Prefer long signals above zero in uptrends
- Prefer short signals below zero in downtrends
- Zero-line reject — momentum failing to flip regime
- Filter reduces trades — saves fees in chop
Histogram Reading
Growing positive histogram — bullish momentum accelerating.
Shrinking histogram — momentum fading even if MACD still positive.
- Histogram peak then shrink — early warning before cross
- Divergence between price and histogram — similar to RSI logic
- Do not trade histogram tick by tick on one-minute
- Scalp histogram shifts — fees need high win rate
MACD on Crypto Timeframes
Daily MACD for swing bias — four-hour for entries.
BTC MACD cleaner than thin alt — more false crosses on low cap.
- Align daily MACD side with four-hour entry direction
- Weekend alt MACD — low volume distortions
- Reset indicators after large gap moves — rare on crypto
- Compare maker rebate if using limit on MACD retest
MACD Limitations
Lagging indicator — derived from EMAs.
Chop produces serial crosses — death by fees.
- Range — ignore most crosses
- Add structure filter — trade cross only at support or resistance
- One cross is not full size — scale on confirm
- Backtest net of round-trip costs before automating
Quick Summary
Crypto MACD combines EMA spread, signal cross, and histogram for momentum reads.
Use zero-line bias, avoid chop crosses, and count fees on frequent signal trading.
- MACD / signal cross — trigger, not full system
- Histogram — momentum acceleration gauge
- Compare exchange fees on crossover strategies
