A moving average is the average close over the last N bars.
It lags price by design — that lag is the tradeoff for smoothness.
- Rising MA — recent closes trending up
- Falling MA — recent closes trending down
- Flat MA — balance or chop
- Lag increases with longer period setting
Common Periods in Crypto
Traders cluster around a few periods — not because they are magic, but because crowds watch them.
- 20 — short-term swing on daily or four-hour
- 50 — medium trend filter
- 100 — intermediate bias
- 200 — long-term regime divider on daily BTC charts
MA as Trend Filter
Only take longs when price trades above your chosen MA.
Only take shorts when price trades below — simple regime rule.
- Filter reduces counter-trend trades in strong moves
- Chop around flat MA — filter whipsaws — sit out
- Combine with HTF MA for nested bias
- Fewer trades — each trade should justify fee cost
Dynamic Support and Resistance
In uptrends, price often pulls back to rising MA and bounces.
In downtrends, rallies fade at falling MA.
- Pullback to MA in trend — potential entry zone
- Stop below MA for longs — allow wick buffer
- Break and close beyond MA — trend may be weakening
- Limit at MA touch — maker fee if filled on support
Stacking Multiple MAs
When faster MA sits above slower MA, trend alignment is bullish.
Crossovers generate signals — covered in dedicated crossover posts.
- 20 above 50 above 200 — strong bull alignment on daily
- Compressed MAs — volatility squeeze — breakout watch
- Too many MAs on chart — paralysis — pick two or three
- Crossover chase entries often taker — check fee impact
Moving Average Mistakes
Buying every MA touch in a downtrend loses slowly.
- Using MA on one-minute chart with 200 period — noise
- No stop when MA breaks — hope holding
- Ignoring fees on frequent MA scalp signals
- Switching periods mid-trade to justify hold
Quick Summary
Crypto moving averages smooth price for trend bias and pullback zones.
Use as filter and dynamic level — confirm with structure and fee-adjusted R:R.
- Rising MA — long bias context
- Pullback to MA — entry zone, not guarantee
- Compare venue fees on frequent MA touch trades
