- Uptrend — rising swing highs and rising swing lows
- Downtrend — falling swing highs and falling swing lows
- Sideways — highs and lows overlap in band
- Regime can differ per timeframe — label both
Marking Swings Objectively
A swing high is a peak with lower highs on both sides.
A swing low is a trough with higher lows on both sides.
- Use 4h or daily for swing labels when learning
- Do not redraw every hour — stability helps
- Software marks swings — you validate logic
- TradingView swing tools optional — eyes work fine
Uptrend Trading Bias
In uptrend, favor longs on pullbacks to demand.
Shorting tops fights flow until structure breaks down.
- Buy dips toward prior swing high retest as support
- Trail stop under last higher low
- Break first lower low — uptrend suspect
- Funding negative on perps can aid long carry
Downtrend Trading Bias
In downtrend, favor shorts on rallies into supply.
Catch bottom calls cost more in crypto speed.
- Sell rips to broken support now resistance
- Stop above last lower high
- Break first higher high — downtrend suspect
- Spot only longs in downtrend need patience and small size
Sideways: Shrink or Switch Playbook
Ranges eat trend strategies through false breaks.
Fees compound when you flip direction every session.
- Fade edges or wait breakout with retest
- Reduce size — edge thinner in chop
- Scalp fees dominate — consider wider timeframe
- Label range on chart — avoid mid-band entries
Trend Strength Signals
Steep angle, shallow pullbacks, and volume on impulse legs show strength.
- Pullback depth under 38% of last leg — strong
- Deep pullback over 62% — trend weakening
- Impulse candles large bodies — momentum intact
- Weak trend — tighten targets and stops
