All triangles have two converging trendlines bounding price.
Volume typically declines inside — compression before expansion.
- Upper line — lower highs or flat resistance
- Lower line — higher lows or flat support
- Apex — lines meet — breakout expected before or at
- Measured move — widest part of triangle height
Ascending Triangle
Flat resistance on top — rising support below.
Bullish bias — buyers lift lows into overhead supply.
- Break above flat top — classic long trigger
- Target — add triangle height above break
- False break above — close back inside — exit
- Long breakout — taker fee — factor into R:R
Descending Triangle
Flat support below — falling resistance above.
Bearish bias — sellers cap highs into support.
- Break below flat bottom — short trigger
- Target — subtract triangle height below break
- Bear trap — reclaim support — cover fast
- Perp short — funding may help or hurt hold
Symmetrical Triangle
Both lines slope toward each other — lower highs and higher lows.
Break direction follows prior trend more often — not always.
- Bullish context — break up more likely
- Bearish context — break down more likely
- No flat side — wait for close beyond line
- Chop inside — do not guess — save fees
Breakout Execution
Enter on close outside the triangle boundary.
Retest of broken trendline offers second entry with tighter stop.
- Stop inside triangle — opposite boundary
- Volume on break — confirmation filter
- Half position on break — add on retest
- Maker limit on retest — fee savings
Triangle Failures and Traps
Wick beyond line that closes inside is a fakeout — not a break.
Late break at apex sometimes fizzles — reduced follow-through.
- Require body close beyond line
- Apex breakout — smaller target — reduce size
- BTC triangle — alt correlation on break
- Multiple fakeouts — fee death — raise filter
Quick Summary
Ascending, descending, and symmetrical triangles compress price before a breakout.
Trade the close beyond the boundary, project height, and compare venue fees on entries.
- Ascending — flat top — bullish bias
- Descending — flat bottom — bearish bias
- Symmetrical — wait for direction — compare exchange fees
