Instead of volume per time bar, profile stacks volume at each price level.
You see where the market spent the most time transacting.
- Horizontal histogram beside price chart
- Tall nodes = high activity prices
- Thin nodes = prices skipped quickly — low acceptance
- Reset profile per session or anchor to swing — tool dependent
Point of Control
POC is the price with the highest traded volume in the profile window.
Markets often gravitate toward POC as a fair-value magnet.
- Price above POC — market accepted higher — bullish bias context
- Price below POC — accepted lower — bearish bias context
- Return to POC after extension — common mean reversion
- Scalping around POC — fees matter on tight rotations
Value Area High and Low
Value area contains roughly seventy percent of profile volume.
VAH and VAL mark the upper and lower bounds of that zone.
- Trade inside value — range tactics dominate
- Break and hold outside value — initiative move
- Fade extremes back toward POC inside value
- Target beyond value needs room for round-trip fees
Profile Shape Clues
Balanced profile looks bell-shaped — rotation expected.
Skewed or b-shaped profiles hint at direction or unfinished business.
- P-shape — short covering or aggressive buying at top
- b-shape — aggressive selling or long liquidation at lows
- Thin profile tail — price rejected that zone fast
- Combine shape with HTF trend — profile is location tool
Using Profile for Entries
Enter at VAL support in uptrend context or VAH rejection in downtrend.
Avoid chasing price far from value without volume confirmation.
- Long bias — pullback to VAL or POC hold
- Short bias — rally to VAH reject
- Stop beyond value area boundary
- Limit orders at VAL — maker fee if filled
Crypto Profile Caveats
Twenty-four-hour crypto needs explicit session anchor choice.
Thin alt profiles distort on single large print.
- Anchor to weekly swing for position trades
- Intraday — reset at UTC midnight or exchange session
- One whale print can fake a node — verify with tape
- Deep BTC book — profile more reliable than micro-cap
Quick Summary
Volume profile locates fair price via POC and value area.
Trade rotations inside value and initiative outside — always net fees on edge fades.
- POC = highest volume price in window
- VAH / VAL = value area bounds
- Compare exchange fees on tight value-area scalps
